MALAYSIA - PAS lawmaker exposes army camps land-swap deal gone wrong in Johor

After 16 years, Putrajaya's ambitious land swap in exchange for a new military camp in Johor is in limbo, said an opposition lawmaker.
Datuk Mahfuz Omar (pic) said Putrajaya entered into a RM256 million privatisation deal to fund the construction of a new army camp in Skudai, Johor, in exchange for plots where the Tebrau and Majidee camps are located in 1997.
Mahfuz said the joint venture between Kuasar Corporation Sdn Bhd (KCSB) and Koperasi Angkatan Tentera Malaysia has not made any headway.
He said they had mortgaged the swapped lands to obtain a RM465 million loan.
"I don't know what will happen now, if the new owners of the lands ask the Tebrau and Majidee army camps to move out. They don't have a new camp," Mahfuz told a press conference at the Parliament lobby today.
He said the new army camp is considered an abandoned project and the problems associated with it had been highlighted in the Auditor-General Report 2009.
“It appears the developers have yet to resolve the current situation. The Skudai project was to have been completed in June 2001.
“But due to delays they were given until 2003 to complete the project but up to today, nothing has come out of it,” he said. - November 26, 2013.
